Vivienne (for Solo Violin)

Category: Tags: ,

Vivienne was composed for the birth of my niece in April 2017. Having had the pleasure to meet Vivienne in person only after the composition was complete, I wrote this solo violin piece to serve as a musical welcome to the world. Fittingly, the music fulfilled its own destiny as it premiered just hours after my niece was born—some ten days after her due date. (The work was consequently called For a Niece or Nephew right up until the first performance, when I had the pleasure of announcing a change to the program from the stage.)

The initial tempo, marked “In no particular rush,” ultimately gives way to a more animated middle section, perhaps reflecting the anticipation that many were feeling in the weeks leading up to Vivienne’s birth. The perceptive listener will also notice the pregnant pauses present in the music.
